The truth is that you guys are not boring. You guys just all post the same content on your timeline. Y’all look the same, same suit and tie, same Realtor pose, same outdated business picture that y’all took back in 1986. I’m telling you, the days of the suit and tie Realtor are dead, my friend. Period.

For over nine years, I’ve based my entire real estate business on authenticity, on showcasing my vibrant personality online. I’m here to tell you that this current market is one of the hardest markets that I've encountered in my nine years of real estate. And if I’ve learned anything about sales and real estate, it’s that authenticity is key.

I have a 21-year-old agent who completely turned their life around last year by starting to post about their true self instead of faking a luxury real estate agent lifestyle. The agent had previously spent 18 months at a firm trying to convince people online that they were a luxury agent, posing in pictures in suits and ties, but got zero sales in 18 months.

When the agent finally took a leap of faith, believed in themselves, and showcased their true self online, they were able to hit six figures last year.

But let’s forget the six figures for now. The truly unbelievably magical part of this story is that she was finally able to express to her followers online that she was an immigrant from Venezuela, an LGBTQ advocate, an animal lover, and a true professional all in one!

So how do you start making this crazy transition that I’m asking you to make? First, you must take off your REALTOR® hat and ask yourself, who are you… besides a REALTOR®? What hobbies do you have? Who are your friends? Your family? Are you funny? Are you a nerd? Are you a REALTOR® in the day… but Batman at night?

The most important question I’m trying to ask you is, what makes you different than the other thousands and thousands of realtors competing with you in your local market? The best way to let your followers know that you have found yourself and you’re ready to show a different side is by posting stories everyday on your social media platforms. There’s a lot more that goes into your social media platforms like posts, reels, and statuses, but I can tell you that posting stories is going to help you get into the habit of showing your followers… the new you.

Showcasing the real me online for years got me a chance to record a rap song with a realtor that I had been following on Instagram for awhile. I felt like the happiest kid ever over the last few weeks shooting a rap video with one of my favorite people on Instagram. I can’t tell you how much of a dream come true that was, being able to show my followers that I could be a rapper and a realtor.

Look, I’m not asking you to reinvent the wheel, I’m just asking you to consider doing business a little bit differently, especially in trying times like today in real estate. It feels like our job can sometimes be in limbo with everything going on, but staying authentic in your business is always going to attract the right people and keep you in business.
